Black History Month October 2026

Black History Month is celebrated throughout October each year and is a vital time to celebrate the achievements, contributions and experiences of black people; both past and present. This year's theme is 'Honouring Our Communities'.

It is an opportunity to learn about people who have made a difference in areas such as sport, music, art, science, education, art, culture and social change – as well as discovering stories you have not heard before.

Why does it matter?

Black history is an important part of everyone’s history. Learning about different experiences and perspectives can help us to understand the world around us, challenge stereotypes and celebrate the diversity of our communities.

        How can you get involved?

        1. Discover a black artist or musician you haven’t heard before
        2. Find out about a black athlete who has inspired others
        3. Explore the story of a black scientist, inventor or pioneer
        4. Read a book by a black author
        5. Watch a film or documentary that explores black history or culture
        6. Find out about the black history or culture within your local community

As a team, we are coming together with colleagues from other services to celebrate Black history month. We are attending an event where we will enjoy musical performances from the Leicester Gospel choir and feast on traditional Jamaican food.
